Common Sense Media Article -
Featured Classroom
Featured Classroom
In my classroom, I created a "Twitter Tree" to help students understand the digital world they are growing up in, in a safe way. It was featured in an article on the website Common Sense Media in July of 2013. To tweet a reply for our tree, I provide students with speech bubbles and a hashtag. Topics range from what we're studying academically in class, to current events, to bullying and friendship.
In February of 2015, my co-teacher and I had a visible thinking routine bulletin board that we created recognized. "One of my favorite things at Live Oak School was the “Wonder Wall.” The teacher posts a theme (this week it was the Miwok Tribe of California) and students write something they’re wondering about on an index card (“What do the Miwok eat?… What language do they speak?… What is it like to be a Miwok?”). When used at the beginning of a unit, it can be a great tool to get a sense of where their curiosity lies." -BATCD Author
Ms. Wortinger's Summer Camp
Each summer, I plan and implement several weeks of Ms. Wortinger's Summer Camp. It's a 5 day camp, in which the kids have a different adventure each day. From fitness and nutrition to cooking, we are a busy bunch. Camp is a fun way for me to stay connected with the kids and families throughout the summer, and it's a great way to keep kids learning.
Mentoring Teacher
Mentoring new colleagues and student teachers really allows me to reflect on my teaching practices. It gives me pride to share practices I use in my own classroom and help future teachers pave their own ways.
